This giant of 20th century modernism (1866-1944) was showcased in Kandinsky: The Path to Abstraction" at London's Tate Modern's in 2006, but this is a major retrospective. It brings together some hundred of Kandinsky's paintings. He was Russian, but became a French citizen. He started his career as a lawyer, but took up painting, producing brightly coloured canvases inspired by Russian folk art. He gradually moved towards total abstraction, theorising that art should speak directly to the emotions, like music. The results of his serious philosophising ended up on a thousand formica-topped tables in the 50s.
